Model of the Universe

MODEL OF THE UNIVERSE

Geocentric
- earth is the center of the universe

Pythagoras

In Pythagorean Model earth is at rest at the center of the Universe and everything rotates around it. Pythagoras also considered that the motions of the planets were mathematically related to musical sounds and numbers. These idea are called "The music of the Spheres."

Plato

He assumed that all motions in the Universe are perfectly circular and that all Heavenly Bodies are ethereal or perfect.

Aristotle

Extended Eudoxus model of the Universe. Sun, moon, planets, and stars all orbiting the earth inside of Eudoxus' spheres.

Eudoxus

Created the first model of a geocentric universe. Celestial spheres share one common center-earth. The sun's sphere orbits the earth once very 24 hours.

Ptolemy

All celestial objects including the planets, sun, moon, and stars orbited earth. Earth is the center of the universe.

Pyrocentric

Proposed by a Greek astronomer, Philolaus. Planets and heavenly bodies were supposed to move around a "fire" located at the center of the universe.

Heliocentric
- sun is the center of the universe.

Aristarchus

Aristarchus proposed the first heliocentric model of the universe.

Copernicus

Asserted that the earth spins on its axis everyday and revolves around the sun just like the other planets ; only the moon orbits the sun. He maintained the concept of uniform circular motion and Ptolemy's epicycles.

Ge

Galileo

Galileo's Astronomical Observations (Galileo Galilei)

• The moon has mountains, valleys and craters. • The surface of the sun has some blemishes, which are now called sunspots • Jupiter has for moons revolving around it. This showed that not all heavenly bodies revolve around the earth. There are other centers of revolution that are themselves revolving. • Venus has phases similar to those of the moon. This suggested that Venus is merely illuminated by the light from the sun, and that it revolves around the sun. • Many stars too faint to be seen by the naked eye became visible with his telescope. He observed that the Milky Way was simply made of individual stars.

Kepler

Kepler's Law of planetary Motion (Johannes Kepler - German Astronomer/student of Brahe) - formulated the three laws of planetary motion: FIRST LAW: LAW OF ELLIPSES • Stated that planets move in ellipses having common focus situated at the sun. The other focus is empty. The closest point to the sun in a planet's orbit is the perihelion, the farthest point is called the aphelion. SECOND LAW: LAW OF EQUAL AREAS • According to his law, an orbiting object will take the same amount of time to travel between points A & B as it travels between points C & D THIRD LAW: LAW OF HARMONIES • It stated that the squares of the periods of the planets are proportional to the cubes of their mean distance from the sun. Period is the time it takes to make one complete revolution around the sun.

Tychonic

The sun orbited earth, while the other planets orbited sun.

  1. We all know that most information were proven wrong because of advanced and modern science along with developed apparatuses. Aside from the lack of proper materials, what do you think is the reason for them to think of these theories?

    1. I think the reason for them to think of these theories because of too much curiosity!

  2. Although most theories in this post are already proven to be wrong, it is still surprising how the arguments and evidences that support the theories are still logical. It is something that we could find ourselves pondering on. Which leads me to my question, why do you think did they have varying (all of which plausible) theories about the model of the universe? How do you think did they come up with those theories? And how big do you think is the effect of the modern technology in knowing where we are in the universe and the exact and actual model of the universe?

    1. I think they vary in terms of how they think about what the universe is, and I think they based on the instruments they had. Like what I've said from the comment above, I think they came up with these theories because of too much curiosity. We all know that the advancement of technology really helps us with so many things, there are some inventions where we could exactly know the actual model of the universe and I'm sure in the future, we would finally know what is the universe looks like, the truth, no doubts, no wrongs.

  3. The heliocentric and geocentric theories have been developing through the ages, it is so amazing how such people, who tend to be just normal citizens, could think of these wonders in our universe. These theories are still laying on the table though, they're long enough and not yet proven, but with such testaments and studies, hopefully we will get to the biggest answer in the universal history.

Which, among all, of these do you find very convincing?

    1. Among all, of these I found very convincing is the Heliocentric, where the sun is the center of all because it is just like what the teachers taught us since I'm in my Elementary Year, which is the solar system today is the sun is the center and all of the planets traveled around the sun.

  4. We can't deny that although some of these models are quite wrong, these studies helped the later scientist incharge of the same field to conduct and propose a study that are later proven and accepted by Science. Due to this,I believe that we should teach ourselves to give importance to these studies. As a learner, on what way can you preserve it so that the other learners will neve disregard these studies?

    1. I agree with what you said. As a learner, I can spread some information, pictures or even videos about these theories in different social media apps or websites since we're so advance and the technology rises up today so that the other learners will never disregard and will still continue to learn these studies or theories!

  5. The entirety of this blog has showed up different theories regarding the earths relation to other heavenly bodies but is speaking about the earth's composition making this a bit weird and unrelated ? Cos i wanted to ask what this blog can say about Flat Earth. Thanks a bunch.

    1. It is possible that the earth is flat said in some theories. But, we really know that theories can’t really prove the fact or the real score about our home planet. These are only conclusions made by scientists or theorizers.

  6. I like the way you put picture of all the contributors of the model of the universe I think it would be best if you put also trivia about them to make your blog more interesting to read but its ok its just an advice . My question is if you were going to create your own theory about the universe and create a model what would it be?

    TumugonBurahin

    1. Thank you for your advice! If I am going to create my own theory about the universe and create a model, it would be: the sun is the center of all and the Earth is the only planet, because I think the others who they also called planets are just stars.

  7. I’ve been in love with the universe ever since I was a kid and I am please with your concept. But we can’t deny the fact that some of these theories are not yet proven. What uniqueness of these theories to prove that they were true?

    1. Wow! Thank you! Out of all these to theories, I am so amazed with Pythagoras' Theory because he really connected the universe with music and mathematical ideas, he even thinks that there were some music that the planets created! That's the most unique of all, I almost think it was actually true.
